Recently I’ve been doing a little research on my family’s history as well as our family’s coat of arms and motto. The Lewis family goes back for centuries and originates from the country of Wales. Our coat of arms consists of a silver lion rampant on a black shield. Our motto is patriae fidus and its meaning is “faithful to my country”. I’m fascinated by this stuff and want to learn more about where I come from and who my descendants were. It takes a lot of time and can be expensive to go through different genealogy sites to trace back your heritage but is something that I hope to one day get to do.

So this got me to thinking about our own family history with Christ and what that means for us. Romans 8:16-17 reads The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. And Galatians 3:28-29 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.

Not only are we children of God and descendants of Abraham but also co-heirs with Christ. And what is our inheritance?  "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom". Luke 12:32. Our inheritance is the Kingdom of Heaven!

I love this because I know where I come from and who is in my family. I can say that through Christ I’m related to Abraham, to Elijah, David and Paul. Christ is not only our savior but also a brother and friend sharing in the Kingdom of Heaven with me and you. We are all God’s children and one day soon we will be with our Father sharing in all the joy and promises He has for us!

Come, Lord Jesus!

  1. Matthew, excellent post. I’m proud that you’re my son in this earthly life. I’m even happier that you’re my brother for eternity in heaven. Btw, I have a lot of the genealogy for our family on my side and quite a bit on your mother’s side, if you want it.
